Remember in 30 seconds

Choose according to necessary availability, deliverables and total budget. A Fractional CFO intervenes on an agreed scope; a salaried position meets a need for lasting daily presence.

To see the engagements Iter offers, consult our Fractional CFO offer.

1. Choose according to the work to be accomplished

An employee CFO and a Fractional CFO can both manage a budget, cash flow and reporting. The difference lies in their availability, their integration into the team and the entrusted scope. The number of employees or turnover is not enough to impose a model.

List the financial decisions taken each week, the people to manage, the deadlines and the missing deliverables. If finance leadership needs a lasting daily presence, hiring may be the answer. If the need can be framed as regular work and meetings, consider outsourcing.

2. Compare budgets of the same scope

Establish employer cost for the planned hire: gross salary, employer contributions, variable pay and documented benefits. This is not a salary survey. The outsourced budget uses annualised Iter fee ranges, excluding one-off projects.

A part-time engagement does not automatically replace a full-time position. Include the same accounting, software and support needs in both scenarios, then compare deliverables and availability.

The prices displayed are indicative ranges. The quote depends on the scope, seniority, data quality, tools, entities and expected availability. The monthly package covers an agreed scope, not a number of hours or days. The days indicated are observed averages. No excess is charged without a signed amendment. Find the inclusions and exclusions in the Fractional CFO price list.

3. When to recruit an employee CFO?

Recruitment responds to a need for ongoing financial management: management of a large team, daily decisions, operational coordination or governance requiring a permanent contact. An employee builds his knowledge of the company over time.

Evaluate the real load and the necessary seniority. Plan recruitment, handover and continuity in the event of absence. An internal position does not exclude one-off external support for an acquisition, financing or a change of tool.

4. When to choose a Fractional CFO?

Outsourcing works when the needs can be organised within an explicit scope: reporting, cash forecasting, budget, decision preparation and regular discussions with the founder. The availability offered must cover deadlines and peak periods.

At Iter Advisors, recurring startup is considered in 8 to 15 days, depending on the available profile and the complexity of the file. Duration and handover terms are agreed in the contract. Changes to the scope are agreed by amendment. The accountant retains his responsibilities; the CFO uses the accounts to manage the activity.

Ask for the name of the engagement lead, examples of deliverables and cover arrangements. A documented case of financial structuring at Opti Digital illustrates a context of intervention, without guaranteeing the same result in your company.

5. Compare the proposed organisation

QuestionPoint to validate in both models
Who decides?Delegations, manager arbitrations and preparation of decisions
Who produces?Distribution between accounting, management control and financial management
Who responds urgently?Availability, contact channel and cover during absences
How to measure usefulness?Data reliability, compliance with deadlines and decisions made possible
How to transmit?Documentation, access to tools and recovery of files

6. A decision based on your needs

Fictional example: an SME has an in-house bookkeeper and an accounting firm, but nobody owns the forecast or explains margin variances. An outsourced engagement can round out this set-up, provided the workload fits the availability on offer.

Conversely, if several teams expect financial decisions and local management every day, an internal position may be more suitable. The hybrid model retains an internal operational team and adds external expertise within a defined scope.

An unexpected departure or reorganisation may call for a interim CFO engagement. For a recurring presence, compare the operation of a part-time CFO and that of the envisaged recruitment.

For temporary cover, see the comparison of fractional and interim CFOs.
