Editorial illustration: Pennylane vs Sage — accounting choice criteria

To choose between Pennylane and Sage, start with the operations to manage: purchases, sales, stocks, fixed assets and reporting. Pennylane presents an integrated financial and accounting platform. Sage offers several products: a useful comparison must specify which ones, with their modules and their mode of hosting.

The verdict in 30 seconds

Shortlist Pennylane if your priority is to connect billing, expenses and accounting in a single environment. Study an identified Sage offer if your project includes commercial management or a more extensive ERP. These are selection options, to be confirmed by a demonstration on your data, and not a universal classification.

The criteria to test

NeedVerification to be requested from both editors
AccountingChart of accounts, closing, export of entries and collaboration with your firm
Fixed assetsComplete cycle on a representative asset: acquisition, depreciation and disposal
Stocks and productionExact product, module or external connection required, batches and valuation
AnalyticsAxes, breakdown and restitution of your margins by activity
IntegrationsReal flows with banks, invoicing, payroll and business tools; error handling
Total costSubscription, modules, migration, integration, training and support within the same scope

What the Pennylane documentation allows you to check

Pennylane notably mentions multi-axis analytics and fixed assets in its official presentation. It would therefore be inaccurate to declare them absent in principle. Their suitability for your file is verified by the rules, exports and access rights you need.

Specify the Sage solution compared

The Sage range includes different accounting and management solutions. Ask for the name of the product, the modules included and the service provider responsible for configuration. A conclusion on one edition does not automatically translate to the entire range.

A concrete choice protocol

Prepare an anonymized demonstration file with a purchase invoice, a sale, a credit note, an asset and an analytical breakdown. Ask each candidate to follow the same route, up to the accounting export. Note the manual interventions, the possible controls and the limitations observed. Have the result validated by the person who will keep the accounts.

Before any migration, agree on the takeover balance, access, responsibilities and reconciliation with the old system. The CFO frames the need and management; the software does not replace accounting validation.
